What a Way to Spend an Afternoon…

By -- B J Keltz | September 21, 2008

Marie from 1Writeway kindly commented on my blog earlier today and posted about this blog on hers.  She introduced me to Library Thing.  I once worked in a library (no surprise to people who know me), and my several hours cruising around Library Thing made me quite nostalgic for the days I spent surrounded by the wit, wisdom, and learning of thousands of authors.

In addition to setting up your own profile and cataloging your own library (which is hard if the copies of the books you own are no longer in print.  Switch from Amazon to Library of Congress if you need out of print editions), there are a LOT of groups you can join for conversation and threads and author profiles to visit.  There is even a group for bloggers and another for writer-readers.

I managed to get 72 books from our personal library loaded into my profile before my eyes needed a rest.  That’s three shelves of one bookcase (of three bookcases, a china cabinet stuffed with books, the guest room closet, armoire, stacks on both sides of the bed, dresser, bedroom closet, living room surfaces (every one), and boxes stashed here and there).  It would take me more time than I have to upload my entire library, but I’ll plug away at it time permitting.  Just a note, I started with the first few authors my eyes fell across, so I’m sure my profile makes me look kind of odd, lol.

Library Thing is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Thanks, Marie!

    Hi, BJ,
You are very welcome! I’m glad you enjoy LibraryThing. it’s interesting to see how many other people have the same books as you, and they also have a section specifically for authors and their libraries. I could spend hours and hours just trolling around that place … like I used to in brick and mortar libraries in my college days :-)

    Ciao,
    Marie
