Saturday Morning 11.22.08

By -- B J Keltz | November 22, 2008

Every Saturday morning, Enriched by Words brings you the Saturday Morning Post.  It is a collection of some of the best writing articles from my reader and blog roll of the previous week.  Check out the links that interest you, link your favorites in the comments section, and have a great weekend!

Sean Platt commented on my blog.  Yes, he did!  See yesterday’s post for proof. :)

Chuck Westbrook’s Blog Project, in which I participate, has segued from our first two week period with Zoe Westhof’s blog to our second two week run, featuring Richard Millngton’s FeverBee blog.   Richard writes about building communities and has some interesting ideas.  His enthusiasm is contagious.

I found this article on creative genius interesting, not only for the traits we can adopt but for the comment that creative geniuses keep journals!

I would really be interested if anyone noticed a reduction in spam emails.  My email gets them, heck my blog gets them.  This article is from Anita Campbell at Small Business Trends, and is titled Spam Reduced 66%.

One of the little linguistic things I catch myself doing from time to time is using “that” instead of “who.”  I had just done it again this afternoon.  How interesting that Daily Writing Tips would post on the same subject.

Here’s Part Two of Finding and Writing Your Personal Essay from Writing Time and Part 3.

Write to Done suggests (and explains how) to create a Swipe File for inspiration.

Time to Write gives some tips on…you guessed it…finding more time to write.

Gayle Trent, mystery author,  put in a guest appearance at about.com’s fiction writing page.  Her topic?  Adding dimension to your characters, and revealing them at the right pace.

All Freelance Writing offers a list of the niftiest wordpress plugins.   I only knew about two of them.

I really like Jamie.  I’m sure that’s no surprise to the regulars of the Saturday Morning Post  I just think she’s too cool.  Here’s her 3 Steps to Improve Your Writing.

Mr. Angst (the wonderful Matthew Dryden) has a guest post on Essential Prose.  Zoe of Essential Prose also had a thoughtful post on being held accountable as writers.

Sal has a few good things to say in his post Who Do You Write For, on Everyday Thoughts from Life.  The comments are good, too!

The Writing Base has some nice information on Windows Live Writer, which was recommended to me several weeks ago.  I’m eager to get my hands on it.

Pub Rants (blog of a literary agent) posted a link to an article from the site of author Lauren Lise Baratz-Logstead on blurbs.  Agent Kristen thinks all aspiring writers need to read and keep this information.  Blurbs are an art..both to write and to gather.

Jen Smith posted a great piece titled “Is Your But Too Big,”  The images and excuses are both humorous and on the money.  Her advice? If you don’t like the story your life has become — tell yourself a better one. Think about all of the things you can do instead of the things you can’t. Start a different internal conversation and you’ll become wealthy in more ways than one.” Whether you consider her take on making a living or (as I did), apply her advice to writing, it’s a good read.

I mistake that for who a little too often as well.

    : > )

I came to terms with “their” for his/her response a long time ago, but that pesky “that” still sneaks in on me, too, lol.

Awww! I think I just got my first link love :D

I’m guilty of the that/who mistake too. Though I still get confused by the its/it’s sometimes and have to look up the usage and difference.

    Hi, BJ:

Thank you for linking to my guest post on About.com. As for writing mechanics, I still have trouble with who/whom. It’s easiest when I can use it in dialogue. Then I can say it was the character who was wrong instead of me. ;-)

    Take care,
    Gayle

The spellchecker demanded I change the following sentence:

“He patted the unattractive horse, whom he finally named “Pie.” (for piebald).

Checker wouldn’t shut up until the horse became “that he finally named.” Ironic twist, lol. I know a horse isn’t people, but it’s living, right? Sigh…lol.

Thanks for the link love, but me, saying something good? I’m going to have to seriously question that statement and your judgement of what is good ;) Keep it up and we will talk soon.
