Saturday Morning 11.29.08

Good morning!  I hope you are having a wonderful Saturday and have a great weekend!

Personal news:  I just acquired my very first laptop.  Hubby and I are currently working out custody and visitation rights. :)

This first link one is by no means recent.  It was published to the web in 2004!  Oh, but what important information for would be authors who think agents and publishers have nothing better than to ruin their day with rejections.  It was written by an editor at Tor.

John Lundberg (Huffington Post) had an interesting article on using poetry to heal.

Amidst a Tangled Web posted links and information the Top 10 Most Irritating Phrases and the 20 Most Hated Cliches.

I’ve gotten some additional comments via email on my response to a commenter on Daily Writing Tips last month.  The forum post generating the comments is a list of 30 plot ideas from “an ancient text,”  that one of her commenters said was unlikely to yield anything beneficial to mainstream writers and readers.    Incidentally, I used one of those plot lines for my NaNoWriMo novel…a story in a fantasy setting with no religion, faith, or divine at all.  You never know where you are going to get an idea.

Duct Tape Marketing posted on the business of Wallblank and their Business Slogans to Live By.  The one featured in the post is perfect for writers and novelists… “Starting is easy.  Finishing is Hard.”

Creativity Portal had an interesting article on how pursuing a creative life can affect your relationships.

J C Hart’s blog contained a post on Sunday asking how much world building is enough for the story and how much begins to have a negative effect on getting the story told.

If you have not been there yet, go to onesentence.org.  I guarantee you will smile somewhere on the main page.  One sentence stories are an art form on this site!

Writing Time has posted the 4th step in Writing Your Personal Essay.  This step will be published in Writer Magazine in the spring.

Janice Taylor (Huffington Post) talks about keeping a Holiday Journal to reduce the stresses of the season.  I’m a huge advocate of keeping a journal, so was glad to see it get some time.

Another Huffington Post piece to check out is Nap Without Guilt:  It’s Good for Your Memory.

Kristin at Pub Rants alerted her readers to the temporary hold by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  That a major publisher would verbally give the order to stop buying books…I’m a little nervous.  Are you?

Matthew Dryden had a guest post at Live Out of the Box that was very good.  Why do I like Matthew so much?  He writes with abandon.  His stuff can be hard, violent, and you are never sure if he is serious or just writing.  It’s the edge to his work that fascinates me.  It’s real and it comes from some place deep inside him.

You can find the first part of Melissa Donovan’s How to Write a Novel at Writing Forward.  Check back for part two.

I never fell for the Kindle (not really an Amazon fan), but I was considering the possibility of a Sony reader.  Until now.  I found this and I love it, the size, the screen, the possibility of taking all my ebooks and other stuff away from the internet (and my computer chair).  No price yet, but I think I’d save more for it over the Kindle or the Reader.

What do you think of Twitter as a news platform?  Twitip posted just that issue.

Time to Write had a link to an interesting visual inspiration source called Moodstream.

Joanna Young at Confident Writing is offering a free ebook on how to ask better questions.

PsyBlog posted an article titled Getting Big Projects Done.  It works for smaller ones too!

Lifehacker talked about a nifty little Firefox add on called Too Many Tabs.  Sounds like something I’ll be downloading this weekend.  It frees up memory by allowing you to store some of your open tabs.
