Where Are We Headed?

By -- B J Keltz | February 25, 2009

stacked-booksBeing the concerned and aware writer I am (most of the time), I do follow the industry with more than casual interest.  After all, my chance of being published changes with the state of the industry itself.

I try to bring important information on the subject.  For those who are also interested, I’m including a list of links for publishers, agents, and other interested parties.  Check out the sites, grab the RSS, and stay abreast of what is happening in our publishing world.  I say “our world” because authors and consumers alike DO have an effect on where this all ends up.

These links are in no particular order.  Their merit is for you to decide.

Eat, Sleep, Publish This site also follows what is going on in the newspaper and magazine world.

These blogs and sites are not just for publishing related news.  There’s a lot of excellent information shared each week, and it is really nice to see the other side of the query letter.

Seriously, folks, the music industry has been forever changed due to advancing technology.  It is only a matter of time before the publishing industry is changed as well.  What does that mean for those of us who are yet unpublished (and becoming increasingly intimidated by our chances) or authors who never made a best seller list?

And what does it mean for us as readers?  Will the economy force us to curtail our bookstore spending, opting for less costly electronic reading?  I have family members who don’t see the problem…they read perhaps one book a month.  For this household, in which we devour 15-20 books a month each, it is indeed a big deal.

If you have a favorite site for information, please share it in the comments below.  The more we know, the better informed our decisions will be.  What are your thoughts on where the industry is headed?  What is your strongest hope and your biggest fear?

interesting times, indeed. i’m curious, yes, but also hopeful. times of great struggle often birth a deeper understanding, a richer tapestry of experience, and, sometimes, awesomely cool technological advances :)
