Scribbling a Rebirth
Oh, the stuff! The grand, wonderful, crazy, bizarre, silly, spectacular stuff that is spilling out of that space in my head that generates words. Unexpected romps with the Muse, unexpected connections between short stories that tie them together, unexpected purity in a bit of flash fiction…and the wonderful, though provoking gibberish as well!
Story starts, shorts, complete flash fiction pieces, ideas for articles, novels, non-fiction works, seminar and workshop material, all of it has begun to seep out of that secret place and find its way to the page. New ideas, shocking themes, emotionally uncomfortable plots, characters…oh my, the characters…. I’m stretching, growing, developing new themes and working in different genres. It’s wonderful!
It is a trickle now. History and experience have taught me that it will widen to a steady stream. The seeds planted at the end of the fallow time will produce. Of all these bizarre and wonderful words, some are dross, some are insight, some are complete by themselves, and some of them will become longer, more thought out and carefully executed projects.
No matter how fearful you are that your fallow time will not end, embrace it. Enjoy it. Use it. Reading, exploring art in different mediums, music, doing good things for yourself, and doing nothing at all…all of these are feeding you, filling up that tank that feeds your writing mind. Laugh, study the sunsets, embrace silence. By spending your fallow time taking in all you can see, feel, hear, smell, and touch, you are feeding your writer’s soul.
It is a rebirth, a coming alive. The best part about being a writer is that we get to experience this over and over throughout our writing lives. We have a rhythm, like the seasons. We plant, grow, harvest, and rest in turn. Just as the sun always rises and the seasons always turn, writers will always experience rebirth.
Isn’t that wonderful?

Hi BJ,
My experience and sentiments exactly – lyrically expressed.
Sometimes I choose to be fallow and I enjoy being in control. Other times, life thrusts a fallow season upon me. I always resist at first, fearful that I might lose my rhythm, my place, my words.
It took a while for me to understand and appreciate that I don’t always have to control everything about my writing. God ultimately designs my life so with an open mind, a willing heart and grateful spirit, I savor these fallow seasons knowing that personal, spiritual and creative birth and re-birth will happen and I will enjoice in it by writing with passion once more.
fantastic!! enjoy these fruitful with overflowing positive energy moments…
Well Done! Great energy and positive blog.
Well you just encouraged me! Love the picture BTW too. I think I’m in my fallow time but doing some reading and editing and waiting on the inspiration to come back! Enjoy yours!
Sounds like an exciting time for you – you’ve certainly been busy writing snippets and having ideas. I can’t wait to see what grows out of them all!
@Cheryl I “chose” to take a week off once and was amazed at the control in flow of ideas. This is just too fun to learn and experiment with.
@Anna I am, just wishing I had more time for it (down with day jobs!).
@dlg thank you!
@Terri I was hoping the pic would explain some of the mood. Glad you liked it. Tank up while you can because it’s coming. Hehe
@Cassie You, my dear, will be hearing much more as soon as this keyboard thing is resolved.
