Saturday Morning Post 3.28.09

As I remind myself yet again this is the Saturday Morning Post, I take comfort in the fact that I have three hours before it becomes the Saturday Afternoon Post.  To wit… I have a keyboard and I am at my regular computer.   I will search high and low until I find a replacement for the two  split keyboards I’ve had in my lifetime.  The first, a Zeos, is no longer available since they have gone out of business.  The second, a PC Concepts, has a site under construction.  Can I have a collective “awwww?”  Once you use a split keyboard with a good touch, you will struggle to use anything else.  I do most of my composing here simply for that keyboard.  Already my elbows and wrists resent this loaner.  So…good lesson for folks…find the tools that work and protect them.  They will give you a longer, um, shelf life.  Oh, and don’t ever let anyone convince you a “wave” is as good as a split.  They. Are. Not.  Moving on…

Watch this.  I’m serious.  If you have any sort of creative aspect to your thinking and your life and your work (and you do), stop what you are doing right now and go watch this video.  I linked James’ post because this is where I found it.  It is more than worth 20 minutes of your time.

One of the projects I have put time into was the Chuck Westbrook Blog Project.   Chuck is now questioning whether to continue the project in light of participants falling away.  I think his original goal a worthy one.  I participated to help the other bloggers, not for reward or help myself.  Helping others learn, redesign, and grow is fun.    I am saddened that this project may go away.  If you participated early on or still do, please head over to the website and give him a comment on how you felt about it.  Not all the blogs were of personal interest, but many of them are now permanent reading for me.

If you’re a fan of Louis C.K. you’ve already seen this clip.  I totally agree with him!  Tip of the hat to Gretchen Reuben for the link.

Writing Fiction has an interesting follow up to a previous post.  Does sexual symbolism occur, even without the writer’s knowledge?

Copyblogger’s 14 Foolproof Proofreading Tips for Bloggers.  #2 “Think book deal, baby,”  Add in a recent article in USA Today which said book deals for bloggers are no longer a surprise…the only conversation is about how big the deal was.  Nuff said? (note:  the issue is at work in my desk somewhere, and the newspaper is subscriber based, so no link).  Another good post:  Want to Know The Real Reason Why You Write?

Lateral thinking and creative thinking from Lateral Action…interesting stuff.

Is this competition?  No, it is amazingly awesome and already on my reader and book marks.  Is it going to be worth reading?  Oh hell, yeah.  Am I a bit jealous?  Yup, but right there to root them on and enjoy everything they post.  Adventures in Writing, get your feed now.

Anthony provides a look at conflict and end-to-end thinking that had my full attention…especially the wallet scenario.  Read part one  here and part two here.  Now, he is setting up for a deeper discussion on end to end thinking, yes, but these two posts are excellent to get a writer thinking about character and conflict.

James at M(and lady)WP got me thinking about expectations this week.  First, the video, which is linked above and wonderful, and then with this post.   Would I rather have an intimate gathering with true give and take, learning, sharing, understanding, or a very large gathering in which individuals were lost?  Such a no brainer for me, and James put it so beautifully.

Lynn Viehl learned something from her photography that I learned back in the old 35mm days.  She equated it with writing, and that makes perfect sense to me.

Sit.  Write. Read the post. :)

Two from Lady Glamis this week:  The Motion of Your Novel and Inciting, not Exciting.

Two from Melissa Donovan:  Journal Prompts for Dreamers and 12 Places to Find Awesome Writing Ideas.

Two from Romancing the Blog:  Filed by…Inspiration (and my money is on the people, too), and a MUST read, One Hero Doesn’t Fit All.

The Blood-Red Pencil discusses what editors are looking for.

What does self esteem have to do with creativity?

This edition is getting pretty long, so it is time to stop.  What would you like to see in a link post?  Just a few, the very best, or broken down into topics or less often, more often?  Please let me know, and have a great week!

BJ, I love these posts. So much great reading. Thanks for the link love, and for a few great reads that I missed this week.

I love your link posts! I like a lot of them broken down into subjects, if you can. You are doing such a great job keeping us informed of what’s out there!

I want to watch that first video you posted, but have a two year old tugging on my leg. I’ll watch it when I can.

Thanks for the links! I am posting a follow up on the Inciting, Not Exciting. And it’s gonna be good, so don’t miss it. :)

Ah, I went to watch that video and guess what? I have already watched many, many times. It’s amazing! I did a post on my blog with a link to this video awhile ago. I just thought it was amazing!
