Paradise by the Dashboard Lights…
If you don’t know Anthony Pacheco, please let me introduce you. He’s a real kick in the pants, whether you need a smile or a writerly chewing out. I adore Anthony and also think he’s a great writer (and I’d beta for him in a heartbeat!).
Anthony spent some time recently discussing a topic that gives some writers the willies, especially if your mom reads your stuff. He did such a great job that I don’t have a lot to add. The topic? How to write sex scenes. Why is it important? Because sometimes your characters don’t close the door behind them, and sometimes the story needs more than the click of that door.
All you pervs that got here through a misbegotten google search, sorry to disappoint you. We’re talking about writing sex, and no mind is as inventive as a writer’s.
The first one, which was posted at Adventures in Writing, talks about how not to write a sex scene and had me cracked up in the first paragraph.
He followed up with The Space Between Porn and Boring, then went on to Your Sexual Voice and To Detail or Not to Detail. Every article is good. The last one is a good guide to how much detail your story might want or need.
Writing these scenes can be difficult if the character’s sexuality does not match your own. If one is repressed and the other is not, which one wins? If one is coping with the pain of sexual attack in their past and the other can only imagine it, how does the description flow? Writing from a position of fantasy is one thing. Writing from the eyes of your character, who might not have your shared history and experiences, can be a challenge.
Your internal censor and your own morals and beliefs have the power to strongly affect these scenes. If this is the case for you, what I have to say is bitter medicine that is good for you. Write them from the character’s perspective, personality, and beliefs. Not only are you true to your character, but you might also get to know yourself a little better.
Anthony did a great job. I would love to hear how Google Analytics handled his blog last week! (snicker)

in some stories details are essential, but in some they aren’t. as one of his entries suggests, it’s about reaching the crux of a character. we all have sex, it’s a part of us. I can’t dismiss it in my writing as I couldn’t within my own life, but sometimes it’s simply more necessary than others…
great post!
This is a great post! I know Anthony from The Adventures In Writing blog, but I didn’t realize he had another blog. I must go scope that out. And not just for the writing about sex.
(blush)
Thank you for your kind words.
Anthony, the articles/posts were really that good, buddy. HUG.
