WYMJ Weekender 5.9.09

Okay, so Saturday Mornings have gotten rough with schedule changes.  Eventually I’ll get into all the old posts and re-tag them.  For now, we start a new entry on the tag cloud.  Gone (at least for now) is the Saturday Morning Post, and here is the WYMJ Weekender.

Method & Process (and good advice):

Samuel Delaney on the use of flashbacks…good stuff.

What is a story? Amber posted her thoughts, and I love them!

Lillie talks about overused expressions.  We all have them.

Lynn at Paperback Writer gives us ten things to help with characters.

GenReality’s post, Mistaking Action for Plot, brings up an issue that I suspect will strongly affect commercial fiction as the younger generations age.

Pace is a consideration that affects your story in a big way.  The Blood-Red Pencil gives examples of what a change of pace can do with/to a passage.

Creativity, Inspiration, and Dreams:

Zen Habits talks about the creative inspiration burning inside us all.

The Inspiration and Motivation Blog posted on how to build and achieve a dream.

Cheryl gives some excellent advice to anyone not certain if their words are worth writing.

Not only did Sumar make me laugh, she has a good point in that we often don’t choose where our creativity will let down its hair.

Industry:

Releasing copyright is still a touchy subject.  Does Leo have a compelling argument?  What do you think?

Brad brings up a point I’ve been pondering for a while.  We’ve become used to the extras on DVDs and games.  Why not put extras in books, electronic or paper?

GenReality contributor Jason Pinter has a few things to say about difficult authors.

The Blood-Red Pencil asks if E-Publishing is right for you.  There are a number of valid questions on this topic, and no time-tested answers (yet).

Agent Kristin spotted something new in a contract.  Now that’s scary for anyone familiar with the potentially rapid changes in electronic use and rights.

Agent Rachelle shares details of agent-author agreements.

The Writer’s Life:

David Bridger posts some thoughts on what rejection is and is not (and how to deal with it).

Another argument for keeping a journal and writing by hand.  I heartily agree!

Did you know that your city might require you to have a business license to write at home?

In case you missed it, here’s the link to the video, Editing Letter.  It can also be found at First Person Irregular, sandwiched between two other funny writerly videos.

Tidbits:

I’m just saying…I tried to quit coffee.  I ain’t tryin no more!  Coffee May Prevent Dementia.  I need all the help I can get!

    BJ,

Thanks for including my post. I’ve spent way more time than I intended reading some of the excellent posts you linked to.

What does WYMJ stand for? What you may …?

WYMJ is shorthand for Write Your Mind Journals, the web site. :)

I’m glad you liked the posts.
